2010_02_09_BEYOND THE GAMES: A 2010 LEGACY INITIATIVE
Date: February 08, 2010
STATEMENT FROM CANADIAN SPORT CENTRE PACIFIC
BEYOND THE GAMES: A 2010 LEGACY INITIATIVE

February 9, 2010 – As the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games fast approach, Canadian Sport Centre Pacific (CSC Pacific) is focused on Games-time commitments while also looking ahead to the future of sport in Canada.

CSC Pacific operates nationally in partnership with the network of Canadian Sport Centres and provincially in partnership with the regional PacificSport Centres to ensure that athletes living and/or training in BC have every advantage to compete on the world stage. Having invested heavily in a team of world-class experts, it is no question that CSC Pacific’s greatest resource is its human capital. This team of 45 staff acts as an athlete’s ‘pit crew’, building a collaborative and dynamic environment of excellence founded on planning, preparation and performance enhancement.

CSC Pacific supports national team athletes training in BC in partnership with Sport Canada, Own The Podium, Canadian Olympic Committee and Coaching Association of Canada. In order for CSC Pacific to continue to help raise the bar for high performance sport in Canada, first and foremost it is critical that multi-year funding commitments are made to solidify the organization’s “business certainty”.

Thanks to Own the Podium’s bold leadership, Canada has made great strides internationally, improving podium performances and world rankings in both winter and summer sport. British Columbia has seen exponential improvements in representation on national teams and medal winnings at the Canada Games and on the world stage due to enhanced federal and provincial funding – a result of Vancouver/Whistler’s victorious bid to host the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

“Canada is poised to be the top medal producing nation right here in our backyard during the 2010 Games,” said Wendy Pattenden, CEO of CSC Pacific. “While medals matter, the true impact of the Games will be the inspiration – the effect that watching an event or meeting an athlete will have on the “Children of 2010”. It is now our job to deliver on the promise of the Games – to ensure the sport system is armed with a plan supported by expertise and infrastructure that will breed excellence for generations to come.”

CSC Pacific applauds the Federal Government’s leadership in pulling together a panel of experts to devise a plan for “2010 and Beyond”. Without a post-2010 legacy plan for high performance sport that goes beyond the bricks and mortar investment in Games facilities, we will have failed the next generation of Canada’s athletes and coaches, and fallen short of maximizing the Games opportunity. CSC Pacific is pursuing an innovative 2010 Legacy Initiative that will put its leadership, new investments and current partnerships to work to ensure that this opportunity is not missed.

“Sport is a key element to Canada’s cultural fabric,” added Pattenden. “Winning medals reinforces our national pride, brings communities together and inspires all of us to pursue excellence in our own lives. For Canada to rightfully take its place as a world leading sporting nation in both summer and winter sport, we owe it to our athletes and coaches – present and future – to fight for continued investment in sport performance.”
