CANADIAN SPORT CENTRE PACIFIC BILLET PROGRAM
Host Information

What is the Canadian Sport Centre Pacific Billet Program?

The Canadian Sport Centre Pacific Billet Program (the “Program”) is an official program of Canadian Sport Centre Pacific (“CSC Pacific”). The Program provides complimentary accommodation in Metro Vancouver homes for up to four (4) supporters of eligible Canadian team athletes* and coaches competing in the Vancouver 2010 Olympic or Paralympic Winter Games (the “Games”).

The goals of the Program are:

  • To reduce stress and enhance Canadian athlete performance by assisting Canadian athletes and coaches’ supporters with accommodation, allowing them to fully support their athlete or coach
  • To involve local athletes and communities in the Games experience while showcasing the warmth and hospitality of British Columbia to the nation
  • To create a national exchange experience between Metro Vancouver hosts (the “Hosts”) and the Canadian athletes’ and coaches’ supporters who will be staying with them (the “Guests”)
    * “Athlete” encompasses Olympic and Paralympic competitors, as well as Paralympic guides

Who should consider applying to be a Host?

Any person living in the Metro Vancouver area (includes Anmore, Belcarra, Bowen Island, Burnaby, Coquitlam, Delta, Langley, Lions Bay, Maple Ridge, New Westminster, North Vancouver, Pitt Meadows, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Richmond, Surrey, Vancouver, West Vancouver, and White Rock) who is able to provide accommodation and daily breakfast is encouraged to apply to become a Host.  A strong commitment to participate in the Program will be needed in order to meet the demand for accommodation and contribute to the success of the Canadian team.

Host applicants must be at least 19 years of age and may be required to pass a professional third-party home inspection.

If you are offering billet accommodations in the Sea to Sky corridor, we appreciate your interest in the Program, but unfortunately we cannot accept your application.  If you still wish to be involved with a hosting program during the Games, we encourage you to apply to the 2010 Winter Games Homestay Program operated by the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC).  Please go to www.vancouver2010.com/homestay and follow the link to fill out that program’s host application form.

What will be expected of a Host?

A Host in the Program will be expected to:

  • Provide accommodation (private sleeping accommodation, bedding, towels, and a shared or private bath) and breakfast (for example, cereal/toast, juice and a hot beverage) for one (1) to four (4) Guests for eight (8) to 18 days during the Games hosting period (8 days is the standard commitment)
  • Meet Guests upon their arrival at the Vancouver International Airport or at a mutually agreed upon location in Metro Vancouver (whichever is most convenient for the Guest) and transport them to the Host’s home
  • Arrange for Guest departures at the Vancouver International Airport or at a mutually agreed upon location in Metro Vancouver (whichever is most convenient for the Guest)
  • Direct or assist Guests to the nearest public transit point each day
  • Hosts will not be responsible for providing any Games tickets or covering the costs of Guests’ travel or other expenses.

Tell me more about the Program’s Guests

Canadian athletes are being given the opportunity of a lifetime…to compete at the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, at home, in Canada, with the support not only of immediate family and friends, but an entire nation.   The success of the Canadian team will result in an enhanced Games experience for all Canadians.

To be an athlete’s Guest, a person must be an eligible family member of an eligible Canadian Olympic or Paralympic team athlete competing in the Games, including a parent, sibling, spouse, partner, child, other relative who may be crucial to the eligible athlete’s success, or boy/girl friend.  Close friends who are regarded as critical members of an athlete’s support team will be considered, but are subject to National Sport Federation (NSF) approval.  All Guests under the age of 19 must be accompanied by an adult.

To be a coach’s Guest, a person must be an eligible family member of an eligible Canadian Olympic or Paralympic team coach competing in the Games, including a spouse, partner or child.  All Guests under the age of 19 must be accompanied by an adult.  Upon request of the coach, another family member, including a parent, sibling, or mother or father-in-law, may be substituted for a spouse or partner to accompany children.

Guest Placement

The information provided by applicants in the Host Application Form, and similar information provided by Guests, will assist CSC Pacific in matching Guests with compatible Hosts.  The convenience of a Host’s home to public transportation, access to relevant Games venues, and the number of Guests the Host is able to accommodate will be key considerations.  Language and personal needs will be reviewed to assess compatibility during the matching process.

Priority will be given to Guests of athletes and coaches of Own the Podium 2010 (“OTP”) targeted sports.

Host Details

CSC Pacific will send Guests confirmation of their Host assignment and Host information as soon as the information is available (beginning in August 2009).

Due to late athlete and team qualification dates, some Applicants may be confirmed as late as February 2010 for Olympic period Guests and March 2010 for Paralympic period Guests.

“Having a child participating in the Olympics is very exciting but it can also be stressful as the family wants to be sure they can get to events on time and not cause extra stress for their athlete.  Im sure it was a relief for our daughter to know her family was in good hands.”

- Janet Brenner, Nagano 1998 Olympic Winter Games homestay participant

“Simply trying to make the Olympic team was stressful, without worrying about the amount of money my family would be spending to attend the Games.  Knowing that my family wouldn’t be stuck spending thousands of dollars on hotel rooms if I didn’t qualify let me relax and stay focused on my performance.  When I was named to the team, it was a huge relief to know that they already had a place to stay and a local host family to take care of them.”

- Veronica Brenner, 1998 Olympian, 2002 Olympic silver medallist, freestyle skiing-aerials
