Doug Nicholas is the General Manager for PacificSport Okanagan, based in Kelowna.  As part of the regional team, he works alongside staff and local partners to provide programs, services, education and training to meet the needs of athletes, coaches and sport organizations in the Okanagan.

After graduating from the University of Manitoba, Doug made the trek west settling in Surrey, BC, where he worked for several years as Program Manager for the YMCA of Greater Vancouver. In 2000, he transferred to Kelowna, BC, where he served two years as Community School Coordinator for the Rutland Community School, in partnership with the Kelowna Family YMCA.  In 2002, Doug began his work with the newly formed regional centre and has thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the growth and development of PacificSport Okanagan and the CSC Pacific network.

A sports fanatic, Doug plays a number of sports competitively but particularly enjoys basketball and soccer and has recently been known to dabble in the triathlon world.

Cheryl Browne is the Program Coordinator for PacificSport Okanagan.  After spending five years in Alberta, obtaining a Bachelor of Physical Education in Sport Performance at the University of Alberta and moving to Calgary to begin her career in sport and recreation, Cheryl finally returned to her hometown of Kelowna, BC.  Getting her feet wet in the beautiful Okanagan with the Kelowna Family YMCA-YWCA and personal training athletes, rehabilitation clients and general population, Cheryl steps into the role of program coordinator with diverse background in fitness and strength conditioning. 
 
Cheryl is a Certified Exercise Physiologist (CEP) with the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP).  One of a select few in the Okanagan, Cheryl provides fitness testing services to applicants to the BC Paramedic Academy (Justice Institute of BC).  Cheryl continues to provide strength and conditioning for athletes training for football, lacrosse, hockey, and figure skating.  Cheryl has enjoyed opportunities to expand on her knowledge and training experiences in strength and conditioning by working with a podium level athlete in Para-Olympic curling.

Kim Whelpton is the Sport Performance Coordinator with PacificSport Okanagan. As part of the regional team, Kim's work focuses on supporting competitive athletes, coaches, and their sport organizations with a variety of programs and services designed to assist a high performance lifestyle right here in the Okanagan.

While obtaining her Bachelor of Business Administration degree from UBC Okanagan, Kim competed for the women's varsity basketball team for 5 years. Upon graduation, she transitioned from player to assistant coach and was named an award recipient of the Female Apprentice Coach Program allowing her to pursue her Level 3 NCCP coaching certification.

Passionate about sports, Kim looks forward to working with a variety of athletes and coaches representing the Okanagan as they pursue their athletic goals.

Laura Wickware is the Sport Development Program Coordinator for PacficiSport Okanagan. She hopes to encourage people of all ages to make physical activitiy part of their daily lives by increasing participation in sport in the various Okanagan communities.

Laura is new to Kelowna, having spent the past two years in Vancouver working for VANOC (Organizing Committee for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games) where she was fortunate enough to watch athletes reach their goals of winning gold! Prior to that, she spent six years in Calgary, AB where she completed her Bachelor of Business and Entrepreneurship for Sport & Recreation at Mount Royal University and entered the working world as a Member Services Director with YMCA Calgary.

Growing up, Laura kept busy with competitive gymnastics until she transitioned ito coaching during her high school years. In her free time, she stays active by hiking, running, golfing, or playing slo-pitch with family and friends.

 
 

Shannon Smart - Sport Program Leader - North Okanagan

Shannon Smart is the North Okanagan Sport Program Leader working out of the greater Vernon area. Her role is to support, promote and encourage a variety of youth physical literacy and participation programs with local sport organizations. Additionally, Shannon helps the many talented athletes and coaches in the area with a range of support services.
Shannon was raised in the Vernon area before moving to Alberta for 5 years where she obtained her Bachelor of Kinesiology degree at the University of Calgary. Beginning her career with the Calgary Minor Soccer Association, Shannon returned to the North Okanagan to focus on providing recreation opportunities with Vernon’s Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs. Shannon is in the process of pursuing her Certified Exercise Physiologist (CEP) certification with the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP).
Shannon played competitive soccer during her adolescence and transitioned to officiating upon the end of her playing career.  She has traveled across Canada to referee various soccer events and competitions and is involved with facilitating referee training for BC Soccer.  Shannon takes full advantage of living in the Okanagan and spends much of her free time time hiking, kayaking and participating in other outdoor pursuits.
