Case Study: the UBC Grand Prix presented by Dr. Jack Taunton
Vancouver's newest cycling event launched in the summer of 2011 to rave reviews.
The UBC Grand Prix delivered on its mission to provide UBC and Vancouver residents the opportunity to experience a world class cycling event in their own backyard, while raising money for the BC Sports Medicine Research Foundation. The event featured both men's and women's professional Criterium races, as well as a kids race and corporate challenge. Bringing amateur participation and fundraising together with the professional race proved a successful new model.

Dr. Jack Taunton combined his love of sport and interest in medicine led to a wealth of exover 40 years in Sports Medicine. He has been at the forefront of the field, pioneering its development and helping countless athletes avoid injury and enhance performance. Dr. Taunton is a  professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia, and was selected as the Chief Medical Officer for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.  Taunton is also a keen promoter of public health. He raises awareness around health issues through television and radio appearances and public presentations and, together with fellow  practitioner Douglas Clement, co-founded the Vancouver Sun Run.

An avid sports enthusiast and business professional, Garnet has been involved with many high-profile initiatives such as the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Bid Committee, the City of Vancouver’s ‘Live City’, Canada Games, Pan American Games, World Junior Hockey Championships, KidSport, the Canadian Paralympic Committee, and BC Place Stadium, among others. Garnet has also been involved in the past six Olympic Games, and is proud to have worked with some of Canada’s top brands in this arena.

Prior to launching Score Marketing Inc. (www.scoreinc.ca) in 2011, Garnet spent eight years at Cossette Communication Inc. as the Managing Partner of Altius Sport Marketing and FUSION Sponsorship and Events. 


Event Hosting & the new Vancouver Sport Hosting Grant presented by Michelle Collens of PavCo BC
A graduate of UBC playing varsity volleyball for the Thunderbirds, Michelle relocated to Kelowna soon after university where she developed and implemented the strategic and annual sales plan for the Kelowna sport tourism market. As the Manger of Sport Tourism with Sport Kelowna she successfully secured over 30 bids for high profile sporting event, including the 2008 BC Summer Games, the 2008 World Arm Wrestling Championships and the 2007 World Sledge Hockey Challenge.

In the lead up to the 2010 Games, Michelle returned back to her home city of Vancouver as manager of the Hosting BC program with 2010 Legacies Now, and was responsible for the development of tools and resources that assisted BC communities in sport hosting; and the HostingBC grant program that distributed $2.7M in funds from the Province of BC to support over 197 events in British Columbia.

Today Michelle is the Manager of Business Development for Sport Events wtih PavCo, developing bids in partnership with local sport stakeholders to host major sport events at Vancouver’s signature facilities, BC Place and the Vancouver Convention Centre.

Michelle has a deep belief in the value of sport as a tool for change and social impact, and is committed to sharing this passion with her community. She currently sits on the board of the Vancouver Sport Network, the First Tee of Greater Vancouver, the 2014 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games, the Volleyball Canada Hosting Committee, and is a veteran with Team BC Mission Staff for the past three Canada Games.
