Ryan Cochrane, a bronze medallist at the Olympics four years ago in China, is headed back to the Games.

The swimmer from Victoria was one of six swimmers to earn berths on Thursday at the Canadian Olympic trials at Olympic Park Sport Centre in Montreal.

Cochrane won his medal in the men's 1,500-metre freestyle in Beijing, but it was his performance Thursday in the 400-metre freestyle that clinched his spot for this summer's Games in London. He won the race in a time of three minutes 47.07 seconds, but was a bit disappointed not to come closer to his Canadian-record time of 3: 44.85.

"My goal was to be a bit closer to my best time," Cochrane said in a news release. "But there was definitely a lot of really good pockets to my race and I'm going to take that as a positive."

Jillian Tyler of Calgary, Tera Van Beilen of Oakville, Ont., Barbara Jardin of Montreal and Samantha Cheverton of Pointe-Claire, Que., also secured qualifying times in individual events on Thursday. Amanda Reason of Windsor, Ont., earned a berth as part of a relay team. Eleven other swimmers had made the team through the first two days of competition.

Tyler and Van Beilen both earned spots in the women's 100-metre breaststroke, one of the deepest events at the trials. Four swimmers went under the FINA Olympic qualifying time, but Canada has only two Olympic berths in the distance.

Tyler clocked a personal-best 1: 07.18, edging Van Beilen, who finished second in 1: 07.37. "I am so happy and so proud," Tyler said. "One of the hardest parts was waiting to race in the little tunnel just before the race."
