FEBRUARY 2011

Welcome to another issue of Coach Connect, the National Coaching Institute’s electronic newsletter. As many of you are aware, I have been on a short paternity leave and will be returning to work February 28th. There are a number of exciting opportunities for coaches in 2011. These include a revamped coaching school, delivery of a province wide diploma in CSC Pacific hub centres, and ongoing opportunities to complete level 4 task requirements.

The International Coaching School, formerly held at the end of August, will be moved to the end of May this year. The school will continue to offer high calibre NCCP training in Competition Development modules for those looking to upgrade or move forward in their NCCP accreditation.  New this year will be a provincial High Performance Coach Advance aimed at enhancing each coach’s personal and professional development.  The four day retreat will be limited to 25 coaches and offer interactive practical workshops combined with other team building activities.  The retreat is geared toward past NCI coaches, Varsity coaches, and coaches of provincial and national team programs.

Building on the successful launch of the new NCI Advanced Coaching Diploma in Victoria, 2011 will offer the delivery of the Diploma across the three Canadian Sport Centre Pacific hub locations in Vancouver, Victoria and Whistler. The delivery of the program will take advantage of outstanding facilities in these locations. Coaches across the province are encouraged to apply with eligible coaches being provided grants to offset travel and assist in completing the program. More information on the Diploma is provided below.

Coaches looking to complete Level 4 tasks can do so by attending equivalent units within the new Diploma program. Coaches should contact the NCI director to develop an appropriate plan for designated tasks.  If you have previously attended Level 4 tasks, the deadline for submitting past assignments was December 31, 2010.  To be eligible to submit tasks in the future, coaches will either need to pay a re-engagement fee, or apply for enrolment in the new Diploma program.  You must contact the NCI director to set up a suitable option.

Finally, I would personally like to thank Stephanie Mahovlic for her outstanding contribution to the NCI and coach education.  Stephanie has decided to move onto new life adventures and will be departing Canadian Sport Centre Pacific this spring.  Stephanie has been instrumental in enhancing NCI programming, coordinating the International Coaching School and managing the Victoria sport excellence speaker series.  I would like to offer Stephanie best wishes and huge successes in her future endeavours!

Sincerely,

David Hill, NCI-BC Director

The NCI Diploma program is currently in full swing at our Victoria campus with eight full-time coaches engaging in the curriculum. The new NCCP curriculum was rolled out in the fall of 2010 to cover four key content areas: Coaching Effectiveness; Coaching Leadership;
Performance Planning; Training & Competition Readiness. The next intake for those interested in the Advanced Coaching Diploma will be September of 2011. This schedule will rotate throughout Victoria, Vancouver and Whistler as the three key locations for program delivery. The 2011/2012 schedule includes three weekend workshops in the fall, followed by another three weekends in the spring to be combined with a series of mid-week, night-time courses. For those who are interested in the Advanced Coaching Diploma, please click here for a brochure outlining admission requirements, targeted coaches and program structure.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What are the admission requirements for the diploma program?

Applicants must be NCCP accredited (Competition-Development/Level 3 certified) or equivalent and have a minimum of three years coaching a year-round program. Supporting documentation and an admission process is necessary (to include a letter of intent, sport resume, NSO endorsement of the coach in collaboration with the PSO, interview with the NCI selection panel). A degree in Physical Education or equivalent is recommended but not required.

I am a coach from the old system and would like to finish my Level 4 tasks. What is the best route to complete these in the new system?

Old Level 4 tasks have been phased out and will no longer be offered through the NCI-BC. The new curriculum includes equivalency options for diploma registered coaches who still need to complete one or two of these tasks, who should contact the NCI BC director to determine a program suitable for task equivalency.  For more information, please visit the Level 4 Task Equivalency Mapping Tool.
The deadline for submitting outstanding assignments from previous workshops or the diploma program was December 31st, 2010.  Coaches wishing to complete outstanding assignments must contact the NCI director and follow procedures outlined in the
NCI Diploma Handbook

Is there a full-time option to complete the Advanced Coaching Diploma within one year?

Based feedback from coaches and the ability to provide flexibility in completing program requirements, the predominant delivery of the Diploma is through a two year part-time basis.  Each semester builds into the next with the mid-point and final presentations strategically placed to facilitate an optimal learning environment.  In some circumstances, a full-time option would be available depending on the workshops and fees. If you have any questions about this schedule, please contact the NCI Director at coach@cscpacific.ca)

Is financial assistance available to coaches?

Yes, there are a number of grants and scholarships available to eligible coaches who are accepted into the NCI diploma program. The purpose of these grants is to assist coaches in completing the diploma program.  Future grants will be geared toward travel bursaries to assist coaches attending diploma workshops in Canadian Sport Centre Pacific Hub locations.  A number of other grants may be available to coaches who meet eligibility requirements. For more information on financial assistance please visit the ‘Grants & Scholarships’ section of the National Coaching Institute website.

I am an international coach. How does this affect my application?

International coaches are required to obtain appropriate immigration status upon entering the country. Please visit the Canadian consulate to gain an appropriate student visa. Admission requirements are similar to a Canadian applicant, with programs in place to ensure equivalencies are met. The tuition amount for an international coach is $13000.00 to complete the program.
